Consider copper plating before the nickel on ferrous metals like iron and steel. The nickel will stick to the copper better than it will the iron, and the copper will stick to the iron.

You do it the same way for copper as you do nickel, just use a copper suspension and anode instead of a nickel one. Wash, dry, then repeat for the nickel.
