Sorry for the late reply, but I recently rehabbed an old Stanley made 5 1/2 using a Wood River V3 blade. The blade by the way is very good – flat and sharp out of the box. My plane dates from about 1900 so it also has the 2 1/4” width blade/ cap iron. Here’s what I did. First I ground 1/16” off either side of the wood river blade. Next, I opened up the mouth of the plane – it didn’t need too much. Last, I soldered some tabs to the cap iron so the depth adjusting yoke would engage more fully. It really is my favorite plane now.
