Thanks to all who have replied so far. I will try to answer each suggestion -
I build experimental biplanes so I am very familiar with mic’s. My bits, which are a mixture of Freud / Amana / Sears bought over the last 20 years, all check out fine as per shaft size.
I have never tightened a collet without a bit in the machine.
I am familiar with the safety collets as I have a plunge router with one. My trim routers do not have safety collets
When installing bits I do not bottom them out. I always stay away from the radius at the top of the shaft next to the bit itself.
I am getting discouraged. I fully expected to read a reply and immediately slap my forehead and yell, “why didn’t I think of that?”
I don’t know what improvement a new router could make, I am sure it will have the same collet size as the two I have now but I may be visiting Amazon in the next couple of days.
For everyone who has spent all day thinking about how to solve my problem – THANK YOU :))
Randy
