You don’t need it to be larger than the plate… make a round disc smaller than the plate. Pad it with something that will give some friction – sand paper, old mouse pad, foam drawer lining, whatever you have handy. Sandwich the plate between the disc and tailstock live center and turn away the tennon to as small of a nub as you can. Then just break off the nub and sand flush. Plenty of videos and how-to’s out there showing how to do it.
