I presume it is not feasible to make the plate smaller?

I always say that if you cannot hide an error, then you should emphasize it in a way that looks deliberate. Cut the tenon off with a saw and then, if you cannot just sand it flat enough, use something like a gouge to carve out any recess that you might want, possibly creating a pattern along the way.
