I’ve made a few sliding top Japanese boxes over the past few weekends. Fore larger sizes, edge glue your boards. They are fairly quick and easy to put together and take no hardware while maintaining a cool sliding top feature.

This is a pile of projects made over the past few weekends that finally made it into the house. One of the mid-sized boxes has already been shipped off as a gift to my son. I think the square and marking gauge went with it.
