If memory serves, around 5 degrees is common,
but I really recommend you read a book like
Jeff Miller s book on chair making and approach
your design process by making mock-ups you
can sit on to try them out.

+1 on Jeff’s book on chair making, very good primer on chair design and construction techniques.
