I think it depends on your bed design, but probably not. You will need something more substantial for the legs and side rails, but you could use 4/4 for the headboard and footboard panels. Why not just buy some 6/4 or 8/4 for the parts that need to be heavier? It’s not much more expensive than 4/4 on a bd ft price basis. Gluing up 4/4 boards to obtain thicker stock is a viable option as well (for the legs, for example).

Another option to keep cost down is to utilize a standard metal frame and build a headboard that bolts to the frame. Then the headboard is essentially decorative so it can be less substantial.
