I believe the elbow should be on the outside whole (closest to the edge of the bucket) with the elbow tangent to the side of the bucket. That creates the cyclone effect. The center then gets connected to the vac. This type of separation is OK but nothing like a dust deputy or Thien baffle. As Pintodeluxe and I said you have too much planer for you vac.

Hope that helps. Let us know if switching the elbow and hoses helps your situation.
