we have 230 acres here but the mrs. is wanting to stay on a budge. how deep do you think I can go and still be comfortable? im thinking 24 foot deep and 40 wide. then I could do just a single 16 foot door and have 22 ft wide. so essentially I would have a 22X24 shop.

I use a two car garage that’s roughly 20’ x 20’. It’s a little tight for all my tools so most are on mobile bases that allow me to move them around. Of course, it all depends on what machinery you have, or are planning to add, that should determine how much floor space you’ll require.

The most troubling aspect of my space is the 8’ ceilings. I’d say that whatever you build, make sure you allow for the luxury of extra height. Being able to get stuff like wood stock, hand tools and other items that tend to spend more time in storage than on your bench will go a long way to making you satisfied working in the shop.
