the big bulge along the log is a tree cancer and normally it is discarded due to degradation of the wood it causes and this can be the reason it layed abandoned aside the road.
the log seems a piece of fir or some other resinous conifer considering also the thickness of the bark, but difficult to say from “here”. good luck !
