Not sure what relative humidity have in SW Louisiana or mold problem, where I live both a problem this time of year. So normally would not use shavings, unless dealing with really wet wood. Even then would not leave shavings in there for more than week or two before dumping shavings and let continue to air dry. My first choice would be brown paper bag for week or two then let air dry.
