first off of you stain poplar with an oil stain it should have a pre conditioner put on it first let that sit for a few minutes then wipe off the excess. Once that has been done then apply the stain. I for one do not use the water based stains yet. then after 24 hours apply the top coat finish. as of lately I have been using spar varnish with a lite sanding between the first and second coat . for an interesting look try using cherry stain I have had some good results with that and the grain in the wood does resemble cherry. good luck with your project.
