I read quite a bit on the Ridgid. I was going to get an older TP1300 a couple times, that has a few issues with chip collection, but was generally well received, but both got sold out from under me. The 4331 has the cutterhead lock that the 4330 doesn’t, which seems to be the big fault for what you describe with the creep. I like the repeat cut feature on the Ridgid, that they seem to have had forever. Unfortunately, good deals on CraigsList have been a real waiting game recently, as people seem to think their 4 year old used tool is as valuable as a brand new one with a warranty.

I like the Dewalt, but those seem to fetch a premium over the others, and a good price on those is typically upwards of $350. Within that price range, I can almost pick up a new Ridgid, and since it will be my first “It’s mine, I own it” planer, I am trying to be “frugal” but smart.

I know nothing about the Hitachi, though, and only recently started looking at that brand when I was researching Mitre Saws. Right now my shop is older Ridgid, Emerson made Craftsman, and Dewalt, primarily. Part of me is attracted to the $50 of the Hitachi, but if it’s $50 thrown away on a tool I will want to replace in a year, or after a couple builds, it’s not really worth it.
