I use a 12 inch Jet jointer/planer and I am very glad I can flatten a glue up that is 12 inches wide without any kind of sled. I use a lot of glue ups with my CNC carving that are wider than 8 inches. I tried using a sled on my planer but it is waaaay more trouble to set up and use than it is to change from planer to jointer mode (approximately 30-45 seconds). If you mostly need to flatten 8 inch or less boards then you chose well. I got by for a long time with a 6 inch jointer.

I think you will definitely like the spiral segmented cutter heads.
