The reason I mentioned Sheffield Steel was that Marples/Irwin (per Fine Woodworking) have switched to Chinese steel and are not as good.

Some years ago (decade, at least) I took a week of woodworking classes to brush up on hand tool woodworking. The class used Marples/Irwin blue handled chisels. I was told that the steel (Sheffield) was good and was easy to sharpen. I later bought some, and used them for years. I’ve since upgraded, but still use the blue handled chisels sometimes. The only real advantage of my newer and more expensive chisels is improved edge retention.
