Well I took it apart and saw no signs of excessive wear. I ended up taking all the gears out and cleaning them thoroughly. One of the gears was installed backwards so they were trying to work in opposite direction. I reassembled it correctly and everything works like a charm now!

Sometimes we have to take stuff apart to see how they work! I’m about 50/50 on getting it back together right but glad you figured it out. My next suggestion was going to be to shim the rack away from the column.
