Also, is there any way to get the beds nice and “shiny” without having to sand it? i took a wire wheel to it, and the iron beds stayed a dark color while, the mouth of the head got what i wanted.

Don’t sand. Start with a razor blade, then with scotch brite pads and some kind of solvent. Putting the pads under a vibrating sander works well and makes it a bit easier. Barkeepers friend works well on stains (oxalic acid). If the rust is bad or you have pitting that you can’t get into with the scotch brite pads, evaporust or electrolysis will get rid of it pretty easily. Once clean, put on a couple coats of paste wax.

If you do a search here, or even better yet, over at the OWWM site, you will see some very impressive work that didn’t involve any abrasives or metal removal.
