It’d go with stain or “pickling” for the color. Letting it weather is a real crap shoot to get the color you are looking for.

Try using some gray paint on a scrap and immediately wipe it off.

Also, I stained some ponderosa pine with a walnut stain and let it dry thoroughly. Then I put on a dark green paint and wiped it off immediately. You might find a good compliment to their existing color scheme.

I also use this method to make “weathered” picture frames. Spatters of black, white, or a darker shade of gray will add realism to your pallet.
