I am new to woodworking and I don t have much tools (yet…). I have been practicing building a simple picture frame with strip of 1 in. x 2 in. x 8 ft. from Home Depot. I want to change wood and use walnut. Home Depot sells a S4S – 1 in. x 2 in. x 8 ft. walnut board. However, all their wood in that size is not straight.

Is there any place in the Seattle area (I live in Woodinville) where someone will rip and plane a walnut board to the size I need? I cannot find any…

Thank you!

It’s almost criminal how expensive the big box stores are for hardwood. I hope you realize you’re paying four to six times the market rate for wood if you buy that from home depot? That 1×2 walnut is $33.78/bd ft and walnut at Crosscut Hardwoods in Portland where I am is usually around $5-8/bd ft

Also the quality of the hardwood boards they do have is absolute garbage in my experience.

You should be able to find a cabinet shop locally that can do this for you. They’ll probably charge you $20-40 or more just for the hassle of taking time away from their jobs though.

Better is to get a table saw and learn how to use it.
