hmmm…I’m thinking it’s each layer (5) is cross grained; layer 1…long wise, layer 2…short pieces perpendicular, layer 3…long and so on. All good Steinway pianos (or even all pianos) have what is called a “pin board” which is most commonly made from rock maple.That is a very high end use of “staggered grain” construction. I contacted the etching press company (Takach) as theirs is rock maple and staggered grain. His reply was the cost of the bed would be just over 2,000.00 !! I’m sure I’ll be able to make it for a fraction of that…probably around 800.00.
Lumber prices here in the Northeast are quite high. Perhaps a road trip to Maine might get me much better prices.
I’ll have to check around…the beauty of the internet.
