I converted a benchtop mill to CNC control. It s not rocket science, but it can be a bit tricky. It really all depends on your gear head, electrical, and software talents.

cncrouterparts.com has kits, and even if you don t use their kit, they sell stepper motors and controllers for pretty low prices.

Joe s CNC has plans and a support forum.

I highly recommend the Gecko 540 all in one stepper drive controller / break out board. Makes the electrical part a breeze.

Depending on your dumpster diving opportunities, you should expect to spend at least $3K to make a 4×4 machine.

Good luck!

holy crap! $3k for parts? Might as well buy an already made one for $3k. I was thinking I’d build one that ran on 1/2” all tread and pipe maybe belt driven with servos. I can’t imagine that those materials and circuit boards would cost that much. I have servos BTW.
