I converted a benchtop mill to CNC control. It’s not rocket science, but it can be a bit tricky. It really all depends on your gear head, electrical, and software talents.

cncrouterparts.com has kits, and even if you don’t use their kit, they sell stepper motors and controllers for pretty low prices.

Joe’s CNC has plans and a support forum.

I highly recommend the Gecko 540 all in one stepper drive controller / break out board. Makes the electrical part a breeze.

Depending on your dumpster diving opportunities, you should expect to spend at least $3K to make a 4×4 machine.
