If you have access to back issues of Shopnotes magazine, issue #48, page 24 (November 1999) has a project for adding some extensions to a 6” benchtop jointer. Here is a link to the online copy just in case it will at least let you see the picture.

They basically just put some plastic laminate on MDF and attached it to the ends of the existing tables with rails of aluminum angle. They added 10” to each end.

Another option is to make some supports or tables you can clamp down to the bench at each end of the jointer. As long as you make it so that you can adjust them to be perfectly level with the in-feed and out-feed it may give you the extra support you need.
