I read many reviews of straight carbide knives, and most say they last a little longer. However they usually have only one cutting edge. Also, they probably won’t solve tear out issues.

I switched to the Shelix head, and have run hundreds and hundreds of bf of white oak on the first sharp edge. The indexed cutters have four carbide edges. No tearout and good blade life so far.

For me the cost per sharp edge equation made most sense with the Shelix.
