My apologies for the misunderstanding. By “sliding dovetail” I mean it’s going to be cut through the width of the tabletop. The dowel will be fitted dry, with no glue to give a little flexibility to the table as it acclimates from the Appalachian region to a conditioned house in the dry parts of California. I realize it’s not exactly as good as a “figure eight”, but I think close to the same thing is accomplished and if I have a change of heart, I can always fab up some hefty figure eights when I’m welding the base.
Top and base are being crated and shipped separately, so I figure this way wouldn’t be too bad to reassemble, just drive the fasteners in from the base into the sliding dovetail in the predetermined holes of the base
