Ken I flatten my Shapton stones a lot.Its also keep a fresh surface that seems to cut faster.
What you might be seeing is the stone changing its shape when it drys.Sometimes mine will have a hollow,for my style is a good thing since I’m side sharpener.
Or the stone will get a hump both happen when they dry.I store them on their side.I was taught to store them sideways by Harrelson Stanley.A very good freehand sharpener much better then me.And I’m pretty fricken good.
I should mention I’m talking about Shapton pro.Gluing them to a piece of glass helps.
