Just my opinion but breadboards are not a necessity but only if you….
Use dry lumber, acclimated to a controlled environment
Use square lumber
Use no board wider than 6”.
Alternate end grain, up and then down
Fasten top correctly to whatever your underpinning
Finish both sides, top and bottom, the same.
Don’t use pine construction lumber
