I have that same block plane, Spitfire. It is a fine user. And the color grows on you after a while. :-)

The missing part is not one you’ll miss in actual use; once set, it’ll stay put until you want to pull the iron for re-sharpening. Not to say it won’t bug you until you find one that works (they’re not all interchangeable from maker to maker / plane to plane), just that it’s not a big deal.
