Carbide or HSS? If they were HSS then you were right to toss them.

Now larger diameter forstners can have cutting issues where they stall easily. This is because the cutting edge chisles all at once over the full diameter. This is not due to dull bits but to the ever increasing bite as the size goes up. Many small dp’s just don’t have the oomph for large forstners esp in hardwoods, even on the slowest/most powerful setting.

All of mine are Roman Carbide (China) and work well even if they’re not the best. I have 1/4” thru 3” bits and no real complaints.
