when I was buying a big jonter, I had the budget to either get an 8” dovetail with shelix, or a 12” parallelogram version with hss knives. In the end I went with the 12” for a couple reasons. One I wanted that capability to adjust my tops in more than a single plane. Now if you ahve the dovetail and it’s perfect then odds are you will be fine. However if you have an issue the only way to adjust is with shims. That concept did not appeal to me at all. I’ve had my 12” for 9+ years now. Never adjusted it. It’s been moved across the country into a basement so it’s been bounced around. Other than a knife sharpen, I rarely change any settings. However I would want that capability.

I think in the end it comes down to budget and whats important to you.

For me I wanted the biggest jointer I could get. I thought I’d get the 12” and upgrade to the shelix head later. Never done it as it does what its supposed to do so I’m good with it the way it is for now.

Thats my opinion but that and a buck fifty will get you a cup of coffee. Good luck.
