I have a 1960’s model Powermatic Jointer and my manual also stated that the blades should extend just a short distance from the cutter head (which is the same thing as setting your outfeed table .015 above the cutterhead and setting the knives level with the outfeed table. When I did this, the wood contacted the adjusting screws for the knives. I raised the blades (and the outfeed table), problem solved and I have been running this machine for 30 years. I think the manufacturer wants us to keep the extruding portion of the knives as low as possible, but when our product rubs the head, muy no bueno.
