Pine will work. It is light but soft so it may dent more easily. I like to use red oak. It is a little heavier but more durable. I made one for each of our grandchildren and have one in my shop too.
Be sure that the top does not overhang the base much as it can be tippy if there is too much overhang. It should be truly stable for anyone to use.
