I just finished rebuilding one (see my page) but I haven’t used it much yet. I got it more for the experience of rebuilding it because I have not really needed one in the shop. In any event, the saw can handle 2×4’s with no issue. As a matter of fact, these saws can be fitted with a different set of (Delta) guides and then you can mount a jig saw blade (in bottom jaw only). That would be plenty aggressive.

IMHO, the MOST versatile saw for a small shop is a radial arm saw. A decent saw used properly will make all the cuts with good results. Of course there are many that would be horrified at the prospect of using a RAS but the issues with the design are nothing that common sense won’t prevent. The “hazards” are similar to using a table saw without a guard (as most do).
