If you want dimensional lumber (2 by x) try contractors. In many cases they have to pay to have cut offs haled away and dumped.

Someone already mentioned pallets. For these I would try smaller stores. Locally there is a muffler shop that will give pallets away.

It would not be free but I have found home based sawyers offer wood much cheaper than wood stores. Last year I was buying 8/4 walnut in 8 to 10 inch widths for $2 per liner foot (almost 2bf for $2). Earlier this year the same sawyer offered me quarter sawn white oak 8/4 12 inch wide 8+ feet long live edge book matched sets for $50 per set.
