How would you cut the notches on these legs? - 12 replies

I’m getting ready to make an outdoor table for my daughter out of cedar. I want to do something like in these pictures with a notch on the inside top of each leg to accept the aprons. How would you cut these? Use a router to hog out most of it and finish with a chisel? All hand tools using saw and chisels? Thanks in advance!

Touching up poly on table tops - 5 replies

I built several tables for a local coffee shop a couple years ago. The owner of the shop recently contacted me and asked if I could add another coat of finish. I assume the tables are showing some wear and she wants them looking new again. I originally sprayed four coats of General Finishes High Performance on them. I’m thinking of cle...

What lid support for this coffee table? - 3 replies

I’m building a large 40×40 coffee table for a client. Part of the top is hinged to access storage inside. I’m looking for lid supports for it. I tried the pair you see in the picture but they don’t work. I think the issue is the thickness of the side and placement of the piano hinge. Most supports seem to be made for ...

Coffee table build questions - 16 replies

I’m building a large 40×40 coffee table for a client. The plan is to have about 1/3 of the top lift (like a TV tray) and the other part hinged open for storage. I’ve run into two problems. 1) The part of the top that lifts is 14 1/8” wide. When closed the lift mechanism is about 13 1/2”. However I didn’...

Source for drawer pulls - 22 replies

I’m in the process of building a bed for a customer. They want the sliding doors in the headboard to have a similar style pull to their dresser. Here is a picture of the drawer pulls on their dresser. Does anybody have a source for this style of pull? I’ve looked at numerous sites online and am not having much luck. Alternativ...

What species of wood is this? - 6 replies

Hello fellow lumberjocks! I have someone that needs a footboard and rails to match the headboard that they have. Here’s a couple of pics of the headboard. Any guesses what species of wood this is? The headboard itself could be a combination of solid wood and veneers. Thanks in advance!

Help! Powder post beetles? - 17 replies

I made a dining table over the summer for a customer out of ash- it’s pictured in my projects. I received an email from her today saying she is seeing small holes with little piles of sawdust on the one breadboard end. She sent some pictures which I have attached here. I got in touch with the local sawyer that I got the ash from and he ...

Gel stain blotchy - 15 replies

I’m finishing a large table top. I put a basecoat of GF candlelight oil stain and let it dry. Now I’ve topped it with GF Java gel stain. As you can see in the picture it turned out blotchy instead of a nice uniform color. What would you do to fix this to even it out?

Cut down and resize cabinet door - 14 replies

Hello all, Would it be possible or worth it to try to resize these cabinet doors? New cabinets now have an 18” vertical opening and the width remains the same. So I’d need to cut off about 3” from these doors. How would you go about this? I thought about cutting off the 3” from the top of the door and trying to reu...

Dining table top construction help - 3 replies

I am in the process of building a dining table from ash that will have breadboard ends. The original plan was to make the top 1 1/4” thick. Unfortunately my lumber guy only had 4/4 stock. I picked up a bunch anyway thinking I can add some trim to the edges somehow to give the illusion of a thicker top. I don’t want to be able to ...

Dining Table extension advice - 7 replies

I have someone interested in having me build a 7 foot dining table by 48” wide – something she wants to be “more polished” than a farmhouse table but not a formal table either. She would like 12” extensions for each end of the table. I’ve seen a couple of ways to do this. One is constructed with two runner ...

What kind of drawer slides? - 4 replies

I’m making a map cabinet for a customer similar to the one in the picture. The drawer faces are going to be 3” high and about 38 1/2” wide. My original plan was to use hardwood drawer runners with a dado in each drawer. Do you think this will work with a drawer so wide and narrow? Or should the drawers be installed in anothe...

How would you make this cut? - 21 replies

I’m making a matching arm rest for a metal porch swing. There is a dado along its length where it screws into the arm from the swing. Very simple if it wasn’t for the curve. The base of my compact router is too broad to follow the curve. Even the shoulder plane I have presents the same problem. Any suggestions?

What kind of wood do you think this is? - 12 replies

This is the left arm of a porch swing. I had someone ask if I could make a mirror image for the right arm which had rotted away. What kind of wood do you think this is? It’s pretty light in weight and the grain doesn’t look like white oak. Poplar? Ash? Any input is welcome.

Dewalt planer ridges - 16 replies

I’ve have had the Dewalt DW735 for a year or so and it has served me well. It would always result in a very smooth surface. However recently I’ve been getting ridges no matter what I do. When it first happened I thought the blades had nicks from a year or so of use and I just needed to swap them out. So I flipped them around to t...

Cutting board question - 10 replies

I made a walnut/white oak end grain cutting board. After putting a few coats of mineral oil on it over the last couple days I can see what appears to be some areas that are sanded differently. I think this is what happened. I sanded to 180 with the RO, sprayed some water on to raise the grain and then hand sanded with 220. I think what IR...

What kind of wood do you think this is? - 19 replies

This tree blew down in my brother’s yard and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth milling. Someone first thought it was walnut but I’m not so sure. Maybe locust? I’ve attached pics of the log, the tree it broke from, and similar trees around it. These aren’t the best pictures but I’d appreciate any advi...

Design and finishing suggestions for this walnut pedestal table - 8 replies

Hello everyone, I’ve had this nice piece of walnut for awhile and decided to make a small table and use it for the top. I’m kind of designing it as I go. Here is where I am so far. I’m looking for suggestions for any design tweaks. I don’t have a lathe so used a 1’2” roundover bit and spokeshave to get ...

How would you cut these splines? - 19 replies

So I had this piece of walnut with nice straight grain and I thought I’d make a simple box. Then I decided to try veneering for the first time so veneered the top. Then I saw these cool splines online (see the pic) and thought I’d like to try them. So this simple box is becoming more complex. I built a jig to cut them on the t...

Burning angled cuts on table saw? - 13 replies

Does anybody have any ideas why I’m getting burning when making 45 degree cuts on my table saw? I have a Sawstop PCS175 with a recently sharpened WW II blade. I’m making a box out of walnut and when cutting the mitered corners I’m getting burning and sometimes a lot of smoke. I doesn’t happen when making 90 degree cuts...
