Timber, stone, metal and glass. The roof on the leaning tower is usually on sideways to act as a table. The other is just a very old symbol. Strictly speaking a cairn is made of stone.

Do they serve as markers or are they strictly aesthetic?

Both, the Canadians gave Brisbane their expo Inuit cairn. I’ve been hooked ever since.
