This is my first attempt at a bowl. It is a small bowl. I don’t have a bowl gouge, so I used a spindle gouge, skew and round nose scraper.

I would like to turn more in the future. I just don’t have the right tools right now. I just did this one to see if I could and it was very difficult without the proper tools and experience.

you can make your spindle gouge work much like a bowl gouge by sharpening it differently. by snubbing the point up, and shortening the bevel. it works pretty well on smaller pieces like this. probably not for a 12” huge bowl. I have only used spindle gouges and can get by, but like you said, more tools are on the wish list.

It came out really beautiful. Like the shape and finish. Impressive 1st turning.

Well Murch, I guess I am hooked. I have made 6 more bowls since this one. I will post them soon, so you can check them out.

Have your say...
