A little Valentine’s ring box made from hand with Birdseye maple and Walnut. All pieces were cut and milled by hand using my Veritas saws and Woodriver 5 1/2 plane. The dovetails are handcut, again with Veritas saw, and are my first ones to be in a project. I used the wood hinge method from Rob Cosman for the back. I also made the dowel using a simple homemade jig for the back from the same piece of wood so it blended nicely. Finished with spray lacquer.

The ring is made from Purpleheart with a stone in the center. The ring was cut from a turning blank and then I drilled out the center. It is not a circle and is pointed toward the top so I couldn’t use a lathe. Mostly used my spindle sander and also sanded by hand. Finished with shellac.

Turned out really well and made a lot of my friends on Facebook upset as they said I, “raised the bar” and their spouses were like, “all I got was chocolate?”. I just responded how much fun it was to make haha. My wife loved it!

Way to go Skipper! My wife got wooden rings too! The ring looks great and so does the box that it goes in. You da man!

From what I see this is a very well done box! Your hand dovetails look perfect and I know the Cosman hinge takes some attention to detail to achieve properly. Would like to have seen more pictures from different angles.

On a different day this could be a top project.

These are the best gifts, handmade and well thought out. Beautiful box, great wood combo and the ring is eye catching. Great job!
