I made these as christmas gifts for my siblings. They’re made out of some recycled closet T&G aromatic cedar flooring.

It was a pretty basic design. I was originally going to use a small brass pin/nail as a hinge, but the end grain was so fragile I decided not to. I went with custom fitted, pressed in lids.

A tip for anyone thinking of making these cut the ends and bottom pieces extra wide and then you can sand them flush after the glue up. I also struggled to keep the sides perpendicular to the bottom. It was only on the third that I was able thought about cutting a square piece of mdf and clamping it in between each side in the middle of the box during the glue up. It worked very well.

They are finished with 3 or 4 coats of miniwax rub on poly, with the insides unfinished. I wanted it to keep the cedar’s amazing smell.

Some nice boxes Matt…It does not matter if they are basic or exotic as long as you are enjoying what your doing and learning, that is what it is all about…thanks for sharing.

Pretty set of boxes! Very nice wood and finish. I’m sure they are well appreciated. Great job!
