I made this for my stepson and his girlfriend. Her parents visited us around the holidays and brought me a few pieces 3/4” purple-heart hardwood flooring they had left over from a project. I ran it through my surface planer to remove the finish and trimmed off the tongue and groove from both sides. I incorporated the purple-heart into their cutting board. They supposedly have a bunch more that I am anxious to get!. This board is about 11” x 12” and 1 1/4” thick. I do find that the walnut I have is VERY opened grained and it requires a lot of coats of the mineral oil and paraffin wax mixture to seal those pores of the end grain. I like to keep the board width 12” or less so I can run the first glue up with “edge grain” though the surface planer, saves on sanding.

It’s an attractive cutting board, very nice pattern and wood colors. Great job!

Have your say...
