Watch Hutch

I saw a picture of a country watch hutch in John A.Nelson’s book “Country Classics” and thought of my Grandfather’s watch I had boxed away in a drawer for the last 20 years. The watch deserved a better home.

Inspired by the plans in Nelson’s book, from straight-grained pine and is about 7 1/2×5 x 2 1/2. The door is half-lapped and I hand cut the dovetails for the case, held together with hide glue. The inside is painted black to accentuate the watch and the exterior is finished with garnet shellac.

The hutch is simple, no frills, and understated… and in that regard similar to the watch’s former owner.

Thanks for looking…

A fitting home for a family treasure, nicely done. I too have one in a drawer that needs a fitting home. Thanks.

That is great. I too have an antique pocket watch that was my grandfather’s. I have been thinking about how to display it better. I never even knew that there was something called a watch hutch.

Thanks for the post.

The beauty of this is in its simplicity. It’s great! I really like the way you have used an eye to hang it.
