A Ooak Original Wood Carving I call “Deep Ravine”, a tree scene that I carved out of a piece of Curly, Big Leaf Maple. It depicts a Conifer Tree living life on the edge of a Deep Ravine. I love these ravines when I happen by while on a forest stroll. I always wonder what it’s like way down in the depths of a ravine like this. It looks so cozy and cool. There’s a feeling of Life’s eternal evolution and change. They’re truly Magic Spots to me. But so many times only the Birds and the Fish really know what it’s like down there.

It measures 14” tall x 8 1/8” wide x 1 1/8” thick
The technique I use is called Pierced Relief. It is carved out of one piece of wood and nothing is added. I have been carving since 1971 and a tree was the first carving I did. I have always been stimulated to carve a resemblance of a tree out of a tree. My technique has evolved over all of these years to what you see here. I keep seeing ways to make things more life like. And I love a piece to look like it is in the middle of a story that each observer can make up. Sometimes a different story each time we look at it and sometimes the same one. I love giving a piece the feeling of action. Sometimes tranquil and sometimes playful. I love it all.

My new favorite, I think. Great carving and excellent choice of wood. The figure going across the grain looks ‘cross hatch’ on the upper right side. The shape of the whole thing reminds me of an elf’s ear… which you being the Wiz, I guess would make perfect sense.
-- I just got done cutting three boards and all four of them were too short. (true story)
