Can I call this intarsia? This is my first posting. It was a birthday gift for my daughter but started as an experiment to see if I could do it. I thought it came out pretty good!... although I see quite a few mistakes… or should I say there is room for improvement… a LOT of improvement…
Let’s see… top is black walnut, eyebrows are poplar, eyes are ebony (from a pen blank), cherry and olive (from a tree in our front yard that fell in a wind storm), beak is black walnut, lower portion of the face is poplar and the inside layer is oak. I scribed the dedication on the back of the eyeball drawers with my new dremel, sanded it lightly, then rubbed it with a pecan before I put on the glossy (water-based poly) finish. It looks scratchy to me, but I wasn’t sure how to make it look more professional.
I welcome your feedback!

Super fantastic. I think I would call it “bandsarsia.” Really great detail and design. Very creative. I’m sure your daughter loved it.

They’re not mistakes, just lessons learned. That’s what I tell myself anyway. LOL Looks good and a very cool design.

wow, thanks, guys! John H – yes, my design. Thanks to watching/studying many youtube videos, LJ projects, and now details like the super-cool bumps/dots on your frogs.
My daughter likes owls, her birthday was coming up… good excuse. I asked my son what animal he likes and he said “giraffes”...hmm.. I’ll be thinking about that for a while.

What a neat box. I like “bandarsia” as well it kinda explains the concept. Certainly a good first posting, look forward to seeing others.

My wife loves owls and I think this one is a hoot!

It really is a wonderful looking project and it appears that you have developed a new technique and/or process that needs to be included in the variety exhibited on this site.

I don’t see anything wrong with the inscription; after all it was done by hand and that makes it more personal.
