My Grandpa was my first inspiration to building things, he was always in his garage making something, tables, boxes, birdhouses. Mostly for utility use, but always square and straight and finished properly. He battled kidney failure for almost 2 years so he could meet his first great grandson, but unfortunately he passed in early december. My wife has an ornament with her dad’s picture on it and suggest we get one for grandpa, I figured he’d rather I make it.

I actually made 3, 2 with a Wenge ball and one with padauk ball. All three have walnut “icicles” and finished with a polyurethane spray. I did finish one with woodturners finish at first but I didn’t really like how “plastic” looking it made the walnut.

Now I have to finish one other thing Grandpa loved: watching the Canadian Juniors beat the US! Happy New Years!

Very nicely done – What a great family treasure.

Cool, a new tradition for the tree.
