I just finished a chess board made for my son and daughter-in-law. It’s a Christmas surprise, but they don’t read LJ so I am safe posting it early. I started with a piece of walnut given me by a friend, and a maple board from a local store. The top is walnut and maple with a walnut inlay around the playing area. The box is walnut with maple drawer handles. The base is plywood framed with oak (I ran short of maple). It is 17.25 inches squared and 3.75 inches high. Not perfect, but I think they’ll like it.

This turned out great, if you don’t mind me asking how thick are the pieces you made the top from?
Thanks for sharing.

The piece of rough walnut I started with was about 11/16 thick. By the time I planed out irregularities it was right at 1/2 inch. I planed the maple to the same. The frame around the top is 5/8 inch thick

Thanks for sharing, looks beautiful. I just ordered material to build a similar one. Going to do the project with my 8 yr old as he’s showing an interest in learning chess. Can’t wait to get started.
