This is a sideboard table I just completed for my wife. I guess it’s sort of a sideboard cabinet. There are a lot of firsts for me on this build. The joinery is all mortis and tenon and sliding dovetails for the dividers. I made center mounted dovetail slide runners for the drawers. I used poplar throughout. I was going to try dovetail joinery for the drawers but chickened out. I ended up using a tongue and groove type joint. The finish is a gel stain with several coats of aerosol poly satin topcoat. This was the first time using gel stain and I like it a lot. There are some imperfections which are my fault. I learned a lot about applying it as I went along so the last pieces I stained look great. I look forward to using again. This project, being my second furniture piece and most complex to date, came out very well. It’s not perfect, nothing ever is, but I’m happy with it and most importantly my wife loves it.

Looks nice Scomel. Looks like gel stain works on poplar. I’ve only tried to stain poplar once and it did not go well. Next time it will be gel.

Thanks! The gel stain worked great, especially after I figured out how long to leave it on before wiping off. All of it came out looking good, but the last several parts stained came out great.

Wood looks great. Very nice piece. Puts me in a mind of walnut.
