as some of you that follow my shop blogs know
i recently lost my daughter saida

and have been dealing with that loss
the best i can

her best friend in los angeles (giddle an actress)
did a memorial page on FB for saida
that got many other friends of hers involved

they had a big ‘period costume’ memorial for her in portland oregon
where saida lived most of her adult life

i don’t FB much but for this event have been more or less active in the memorial site
and have ‘met’ many of saidas friends there
giddle – the actress – she was in the news at the unveiling of janis joplins star on the walk of fame recently
and was picked because she wore feathers in her hair like janis did
teresa – known as ‘mother teresa’ – a kind and caring woman that took saida in to her heart
courtney – i think of her as ‘the bat lady’ – who saida went to high school with (she want’s to save the bats)
ashley – the roommate that lived with saida and took her to the hospital
these are the ones that stand out to me
and helped saida thru lifes trials
i decided to thank by making them a ‘memorial box’

these boxes are the result of that thought
i didn’t really know her till she was 21
when she found out i was still alive
after her mother had told he i was dead all her life
the results of that lie cost us both dearly
but love wins in the end
and until she passed at 44 we had long and close connections
and shared love the best we could
these friends (who i have never met)
told me stories and shared pictures i had never seen
and i am very grateful to them all

the box idea came from my initial talks with ashley the roommate
i had made saida a ‘prayer box’ years before
and had a custom ‘prayer fan’ made from macaw feathers for her
by a pawnee man i took care of for years before he too passed

i asked ashley for the box back and she agreed to this
but unfortunately she has not been heard from since
so i guess i have one box extra now
perhaps i will keep it for my own memories
or find another to pass it on to

all these boxes are from other projects i had made before
the walnut and cherry sides were from the memorial boxes i did for my brother joes passing

and the top from the tack chest made for a young lady
out of hard maple

the hearts are all from exotics and each is a different one
(still have the leftovers too for future builds)

thank you all for looking

please all be safe
and have a wonderful holidays
with your loved ones

as for me
i am proud to be healing now
and appreciate some advice i got in a PM this morning

‘God, or the universe has taught me many many lessons through this illness. I have learned for one, that I no longer have to go a million miles an hour to prove my worth. I’m worthy just because.’

Good stuff, David. I know they will be proud to receive them. Perhaps some day you will receive that box back.

That’s quite a story David, and again sorry for your loss. It is truly great that you did have all those good years and memories. And now some new friends and memories. Cool boxes…..I’m sure they will be appreciated, hopefully you can re-connect with Ashley as well. Thanks for sharing…...

It does me good to hear that the healing has begun.

The memorial boxes are lovely and will surely be treasured.
They will not only contain memories….
but will be filled with the love both you and the recipients share for Saida!

My best to you, this holiday season!!!

What can I say David.
You are a one of a kind good man.
I can only hope that the warm friendships you share here with your many woodworking friends can in some part help you through these tough times. Many are thinking of you right now.
The boxes are beautiful representations of you to be shared by your daughters friends
They will be cherished for sure.

Dave; The love of your heart, passes through your fingers and hands. Holding God’s wood and folding and caressing it like it’s your daughter Saida. The joy you have passes through your work. Her friends will be truly blessed.

May you find the peace that comes into your heart from the joys that you’ve received from those who give unashamed love and give it without expecting rewards but in doing so are truly rewarded.

Love you brother.
