My wife is a collecter of Dickens Department 56 houses.
One day she received an advertising brochure that had a panoramic picture of Dickens houses. I thought it would make an interesting carving.
A friend of mine had worked in Liberia for about 10 years. & had his belongings shipped back on his return. The shipping crate was constructed of Mahogany. He asked me if I could use the wood, & I told him to bring it to me. The boards were 1/2” X 9” wide So I’ve been putting it to use with various projects, & as you can see by this beautiful, & unique carving.

I wish I could carve like this. I have been trying to include carving in my furniture work, but I am not talented enough to do what you are able to do.

Dick, this is a treasure as are the rest of your works. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
I’m curious, how many hours on that piece? I’ve never done any carving other than on a pine board for woodcut prints back in school.

Thanks everyone
I usually never keep a record of my time, But I estimate on this one could be 40 to 60 hours.

I think this may be your best one yet. Have you even taught anyone how to carve, you seem like you’d be a good teacher since you are so good at it?

Thanks Diane, I taught a few classes shortly after I retired. It was fun, but I never seem to have enough time for the other things I like to do. There’s never a dull moment.
One class I taught how to carve this Hummingbird. It was a 6 hour class of 6 people.

Dick -
I somehow missed this one. Great work as always! I love your carving – wish I could do the same. My wife and I also collect Dept 56 – it is a bit of an addiction! Again, I greatly admire your work.

David,
Thank you for your kind comments. You must have spotted this from the shuffle.
I’ve discovered some things I missed myself.

Dick -
I am using the shuffle feature to my amazement of how much I have missed – such a prolific group! Also, my shop & computer time fluxuates with demands of the wife and regular work! :-)

Beautifully carved, Dick. Fine job.
