I wanted some art to hang on my wall, but couldn’t settle on anything. It occurred to me that wood is gorgeous, so why not that? I didn’t even draw up any plans—I just grabbed some scraps and started going at it. I toyed with some curved joinery, outlined by this guy's awesome writeup. The dark wood is black walnut, and the lighter wood is red oak and black cherry. I’m fortunate enough to have a 15” surface planer which helped me clean up all the joints, and kept going down to about 1/2” to make it light-weight. I finished it with just a coat of sealcoat followed by 2 coats of clear shellac. Better on my wall than in the fireplace!

Nice work Adam! I’ve thought to do just the same. Grain in wood is so beautiful in and of itself.

Cool idea! It makes a great accent piece in the house. Beautiful wood colors and finish. Great job!
